Here I focused on streamlining and documenting signup, onboarding, invitation, and calibration processes. Much of this was subject to the needs of the IoT door lock, so I simplified what was asked of the user when possible, and created clear paths of communication when it was not. Within this I also worked on creating IA for the complex notification system.
I contributed significant novel experiences into this design, most notably what we called the “lock picker”. Previously, there was no clear way for the user to add a new lock or view all locks available to them. I chose to create a drawer where a user could switch between any lock they have access to or add a new one, enabling a smoother experience of calibration, settings, and key sharing.
My approach, to work within business needs while also addressing large holes in the UX, was generally effective. Is this the way I would have designed this system from the ground up? No, however I saw this project as an opportunity to test my ability to work within rigid constraints and business needs while still delivering a good experience to the user.
